HCC received our certification as a Fairtrade Church in March 2009.  We hope we will be one of several churches in Huntingdon achieving this certification, in order both to support farmers and producers through the Fairtrade movement and to support the case for Huntingdon becoming a Fairtrade town.

What is a Fairtrade Church?

In order to achieve Fairtrade Church status, we had to meet the following three goals:

  • Use Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and in all meetings for which we have responsibility - we have implemented this for refreshments after our Sunday meetings and for catering provided at the church centre
  • Move forward on using other Fairtrade products such as sugar, biscuits and fruit - sugar for our Sunday meetings is now Fairtrade, and will be shortly within the church centre
  • Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the year through events, worship and other activities whenever possible - Fairtrade products are available most Sundays on the Traidcraft stall; Fairtrade bananas and the benefit of Fairtrade to Third World communities was featured during a children's address in March 2009.

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
